Eco-friendly Port
Tanger Med Port Authority confirms its environmental commitment by implementing ecological measures:
Port reception facility for the collection and treatment of liquid hydrocarbon waste
In accordance with the MARPOL 73/78 International Convention for the Prevention of Marine Pollution from Ships and with the provisions of national regulations, Tanger Med Port Authority has set up a port reception facility for the collection and treatment of waste oil and hydrocarbon-laden water from vessels that call at the Port and from operators in the Port Zone.
Collection of liquid waste from vessels (MARPOL Appendix I)
The Port Authority has set up a collection service for oily liquid waste under Appendix I of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships “MARPOL”.
Liquid waste containing hydrocarbons is collected by barge and tanker trucks and transferred for treatment in accordance with the relevant regulations and the provisions of the “MARPOL” convention.
The company “SERTEGO” has been authorized to provide this service.
Collection of solid waste from vessels (MARPOL Appendix V)
The Port Authority has implemented the solid waste collection service under Appendix V of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships “MARPOL”.
Solid waste is collected by truck and transferred for treatment in accordance with the relevant regulations and the provisions of the “MARPOL” Convention.
The company “Tanger Med Utilities S.A. (TMU)” has been authorized to provide this service.
Collection of solid waste from vessels (MARPOL Appendix VI)
Tanger Med Port is committed to complying with WHO regulations concerning the reduction of air pollution from maritime transport by setting up a waste collection service for gas scrubbers from vessels calling at Tanger Med Port.
This waste will be collected by barge and by tanker trucks and transferred for treatment in accordance with the relevant regulations and the provisions of the “MARPOL” Convention.
The company “SERTEGO” has been authorized to provide this service.
Port wastewater reception facilities
Tanger Port Complex is equipped with two wastewater treatment plants. These plants consist of a SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) treatment system. This is an innovative technique for treating wastewater. The treatment is completely biological and is carried out on cylindrical units (reactor).
Water and sediment quality analysis
As part of the monitoring of seawater quality in Tanger Port Complex as required by ISO 14001 and CSR practices, Tanger Med Port Complex conducts an annual measurement campaign of seawater and sediment quality in the basin and anchorage zones with interpretation of the results obtained in relation to the regulations in force.
Air quality analysis
To ensure air quality and compliance with national and international standards, Tanger Med Port Authority ensures:
- A system of annual air quality inspection through the analysis of samples by accredited laboratories
- The implementation of a fixed reservation system in order to optimize the waiting time of vessels in the harbor
- Sending certificates of conformity for gas purification systems to Tanger Med Port before the vessel calls
- Prohibition of wastewater discharge from gas scrubbers installed aboard vessels

As part of the deployment of the Zero GHG emissions program, Tanger Med has set up two wastewater treatment, purification and recycling plants. These plants are equipped with an SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) treatment system, which is an innovative wastewater treatment technique. The treatment is completely biological and is carried out on cylindrical units (reactor).
The recycled water is then used to water the green spaces at the Port Complex and in the Activity Zones.
Les eaux recyclées sont utilisées par la suite pour l’arrosage des espaces verts au complexe portuaire et dans les zones d’activités.
The Tanger Med Port Authority requires ships calling at the Tanger Med port to send certificates of conformity for gas scrubbers before they call at the Tanger Med Port, with a ban on the discharge of wash water from gas scrubbers installed aboard the vessels.
“Ecoports” label
As confirmation of Tanger Med Port’s strong environmental commitment, and given its international vocation and its ISO 14001 certification, the Port Authority has obtained the “Ecoports” label and the PERS certification granted by the European Sea Ports Organisation (EPSO).
This label is granted to ports adhering to “best practices” in terms of sustainable development and has the following objectives:
- Making the environment a competitive factor between ports
- Creating a level playing field for environmental management in the port sector
- Exchange information on effective and environmentally-friendly solutions.
Energy efficiency
The administrative buildings of the Tanger Med Port are equipped with photovoltaic panels to supply the facilities with solar energy. In addition to the widespread use of LED lighting in the Port facilities, and the reduction of power consumption in the Data Center by improving air conditioning flows, an energy performance project has been implemented to optimize power consumption to ensure public lighting.
